Udhagamandalam: Over 500 people formed a human chain from main bus stand to ATC bus stand here and held a rally on Monday to create awareness about  ’vultures conservation’.  The rally,  organized by ‘Arulagam’,  a Coimbatore- based NGO, was inaugurated by Srinivas R Reddy,  director,  Hill Area Development Project and a brochure titled  ’Why conserve vultures’ was released by the Nilgiris SPS Nizamudhin. B Sugirtharaj Koilpillai,  district forest officer (south division) and officials from animal husbandry also took part in the event. Later: students were asked to spread the message of conserving vultures to the public.

According to S Bharathidasan, secretary, ‘Arulagam’,  the vulture population had dwindled drastically in the Nilgiris.  ”The main reason for decline in vulture population is the pain-killer medicines namely ‘Diclofenac’, a banned one, used for the animals,” he said. Bharathidasan said,  ”The drug was banned in 2006 by the drug control authorities but it is still available in the market as it is very cheap.  We have roped in medical store owners and veterinary doctors in this rally and requested them not to sell the medicine.” Vultures are seen only in Moyar area in the Nilgiris nowadays,  he said.

The forest belt in Nilgiris comprising Theppakadu,  Masinagudi, Sigur adjoining forest areas in Moyar valley leading to Sathyamangalam forest area is the prime place of abode for vultures.  Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) in the Nilgiris is the main abode for the vultures and it is considered as the home for the highest population of vultures in the country.

MTR houses vultures like white backed vulture, long billed vulture and king vulture.  In India, there are eight species of vultures, the commonest being the Indian Scavenger which is found practically all over the country.

According to forest officials, a number of species like the Indian King and long billed griffon are critically endangered vultures.  And the vulture population is close to extinction.  Vulture census was held in the MTR last November
